Planting

When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow
Choose dappled shade, woodland edges, hedge lines or beneath open tree canopies. Avoid deep, dry shade.

How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate
5 g per m².

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep damp during germination and prolonged dry spells. Removeobvious weeds and fallen leaves that smother seedlings. Cut back after flowering where appropriate.

Results

Flowering
From spring through late summer, with different species appearing at different times.

Height
Around 20 cm to 1.5 metres.

What to expect
Woodland species are patient creatures. Some may take more than one year to establish, but the display should become richer and more natural over time.

Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.
