Planting

When to sow: March to May, or August to October

Position: Sunny or mostly sunny

Soil: Bare, well drained soil

Clear the area of grass and weeds. Rake the surface, scatter the seeds evenly and press them gently into the soil.

Do not bury the seeds deeply. Good contact with bare soil is more important than perfect measurements.
Nurture

Keep the surface damp while the seeds germinate, particularly during dry weather.

Remove obvious weeds and avoid adding fertiliser. Once established, the plants should need little attention beyond occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.
Pots

Yes, this mix can be grown in pots.

Use one packet per pot or container. Choose a wide pot with drainage holes and fill it with low nutrient, free draining compost.

Scatter the seeds over the surface, press them in gently and keep the compost damp. Place the pot in a sunny position.
Results

Annual species such as cornflower, corncockle and field poppy can provide colour during the first flowering season.

Perennial and biennial species, including ox-eye daisy, red campion, chicory, viper’s bugloss and wild carrot, may take longer to establish and become more prominent in later years.

The plants will vary in height and flowering time, creating a loose, natural meadow style display rather than a perfectly uniform flower bed.
