The Dark Turf Rises — Shady Lawn Seed Mix

Regular price £10.99

Born in the shadows. Thriving in the gloom.

The Dark Turf Rises is designed for lawns that receive less direct sunlight due to trees, hedges, fences, walls or a north facing position.

Its mixture of red fescues, tall fescue, hard fescue, Highland Bent and smooth stalked meadow grass creates a slower growing lawn that copes better with partial shade than standard lawn mixtures.

It cannot create sunlight where none exists, but it gives shaded lawns a much better fighting chance.

Born in the shadows. Thriving in the gloom.

Best For
  • Partially shaded gardens
  • Lawns beneath lightly canopied trees
  • North facing lawns
  • Areas beside walls, fences and hedges
  • Cooler parts of the garden
  • Lawns where standard grass has struggled

This mixture still needs some natural light. Areas in permanent, very deep shade may remain difficult to establish.

Sowing

Best sowing time: March to May, or August to October

New lawn sowing rate: 50 g per m²

Overseeding rate: 20 g to 30 g per m²

Sowing depth: Surface sow and lightly rake in

Remove weeds and as much moss as possible. Loosen compacted soil and rake the surface level before scattering the seed evenly.

For an existing shady lawn, mow short, scarify or rake firmly, and expose small areas of soil before overseeding.

These measurements are approximate. An even spread helps, but growing a lawn does not require laboratory precision.

Lawn tip: Prune back low branches or dense hedging where possible. Even a modest improvement in light and airflow can make a noticeable difference.

Aftercare

Shaded soil can remain damp for longer, so water according to conditions rather than automatically soaking it every day.

Keep the seedbed damp during germination, but avoid persistent waterlogging. Remove fallen leaves regularly, as these can block light and smother young grass.

Once established, mow at around 20 mm to 30 mm or leave slightly longer than a lawn in full sun. Avoid scalping shaded grass.

Results

Germination normally begins within 10 to 21 days, although cooler shaded ground can delay growth.

The mixture should create an even, fine textured lawn with better shade tolerance than a standard general purpose blend. Growth may be slower in darker areas, so patience is part of the uprising.
