Planting

When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow
Choose partial shade or dappled light, such as beside hedges, fences or woodland edges. Avoid permanent, deep darkness.

How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate
5 g per m².

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep damp during germination and dry spells. Remove obviousweeds, but avoid feeding. Cut back after flowering and remove the cut material.

Results

Flowering
Mostly late spring to late summer.

Height
Around 30 cm to 1.2 metres.

What to expect
Shade tolerant species often establish at different speeds. Red campion and vetches may show early, while the fuller meadow develops over later seasons.

Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.
