Sow directly where the parsnips will grow. Germination can be slow, so keep the soil moist and be patient.
These measurements are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if every seed is not perfectly placed.
Grower tip: Use fresh seed and avoid letting the surface dry out while you wait for germination. Parsnips take their time, but they are usually worth the wait.
Parsnips like deep, stone free soil. Avoid freshly manured ground, as this can cause forked roots. Keep the area weed free while seedlings are small. Once established, they need very little fuss.
Parsnips are best grown in open ground or deep raised beds. Theyare not ideal for small pots because they need depth. A very deep container can work, but ground growing is usually better.
Harvest from autumn into winter. The flavour improves after cold weather, when the roots become sweeter. Lift carefully with a fork to avoid snapping the roots.
