Sow in pots, trays or a prepared seed bed. Transplant when the seedlings are roughly pencil thick.

Grower tip: Drop each young leek into a deep planting hole and water it in without filling the hole with soil. This helps create a longer white stem.
Leeks like fertile soil and steady moisture. Plant seedlings deeply to encourage long white stems. Keep weeded and water during dry spells. They are slow growing, but very reliable once established.
Leeks are better in beds or raised beds than small pots. They can grow in large deep containers, but need good spacing and depth. Use a deep trough or large planter if growing in a small space.
Harvest from autumn into winter. Lift leeks as needed, using a fork to loosen the soil first. They can stand in the ground through cold weather, making them a brilliant winter crop.
