Sowing

Sow indoors - March to May
Sow outdoors - April to June
Sowing depth - Around 1 cm
Final spacing - Around 45 cm
Germination - Usually 7 to 14 days

Start in pots or trays, or sow into a prepared seed bed. Transplant when the seedlings are large enough to handle.

These measurements are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if every seed is not perfectly placed.

Grower tip: Cover young plants with fine insect mesh. It is one of the simplest ways to stop caterpillars reaching the leaves before you do.

Growing

Kale is hardy and reliable. It likes fertile soil, steady moisture and good spacing. Protect young plants from slugs and caterpillars. Remove yellowing lower leaves as plants grow.

Pots & Space

Kale can grow in large pots. Use one plant per large container, ideally at least 30 cm wide and deep. It also grows well in raised beds. Give it sun or partial shade.

Harvest

Pick lower leaves once plants are established, leaving the top tokeep growing. Harvest from late summer through winter. Regular picking encourages more leaves.
