Sowing

Sow outdoors - March to July
Sowing depth - 1 cm
Final spacing - Around 5 cm
Row spacing - 20 cm to 30 cm
Germination - Usually 14 to 21 days

Sow thinly where the carrots will grow, as they do not enjoy being transplanted. Thin crowded seedlings carefully once they appear.

These measurements are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if every seed is not perfectly placed.

Grower tip: Grow in fine, stone free soil. Stones and compacted ground can cause the roots to fork into some very creative shapes.

Growing

Carrots like light, stone free soil. Avoid freshly manured ground, as this can cause forked roots. Keep the soil moist while seeds germinate, then water during dry spells. Weed carefully so the small seedlings are not crowded out.

Pots & Space

Carrots grow well in pots if the container is deep enough. Use a pot at least 25 cm to 30 cm deep, filled with fine compost. Sow thinly and keep evenly watered. Pots are a good option if your garden soil is heavy or stony.

Harvest

Harvest from June onwards, depending on sowing time. Pull when roots are a good size, or lift smaller carrots early as baby carrots. Carrots are best eaten fresh, but they also store well in a cool place.
