Sow thinly in small pots or trays and keep warm. Basil dislikes cold nights, so do not rush it outside.
These measurements are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if every seed is not perfectly placed.
Grower tip: Pinch out the growing tip once the plant has several sets of leaves. This encourages a bushier plant with more leaves to harvest.
Basil likes warmth, light and shelter. Keep it indoors, in a greenhouse, or outside only during warm settled weather. Water regularly, but do not leave it sitting in soggy compost. Pinch out the tips to
encourage bushier growth.
Basil is excellent in pots. Grow on a sunny windowsill, balcony, greenhouse or sheltered patio. Use a pot at least 15 cm wide, or grow several plants in a larger container. Keep near the kitchen for easy picking.
Start picking once the plant is around 15 cm tall. Pick leaves from the top rather than stripping the lower leaves. Regular picking keeps the plant bushy and delays flowering.
