Planting

When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow
Grow in pots, troughs, window boxes or bare garden soil in sun or light partial shade.

How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate
Scatter thinly and evenly.

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep the soil or compost damp while seedlings establish. Remove obvious weeds and do not feed. Leave some seed
heads to set seed before cutting back.

Pots

Yes, this mix can be planted in pots, troughs and window boxes. Use a container with drainage holes and low nutrient compost. Scatterthe seed thinly, press it in gently and keep the surface damp while it establishes.

Results

Flowering
Late spring through summer.

Height
Approximately 15 cm to 80 cm.

What to expect
Cornfield annuals may flower in the first year, while the perennial species can return in later seasons. Leave some seed heads to encourage self seeding.

Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.
