Planting

When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow
Sow on prepared bare clay soil in sun or partial shade. Break up compacted ground before sowing.

How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate
3 g per m².

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep the surface damp while seeds germinate, without waterlogging it. Remove obvious weeds, do not feed and cut back after flowering.

Results

Flowering
Generally late spring to late summer.

Height
Around 20 cm to 1 metre.

What to expect
Annual and faster species may appear first, while perennial flowers become more prominent as the planting matures.

Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.
