Planting

When to sow

For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow

Choose an open, sunny position with well drained soil.

How to sow

Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate

3 g per m².

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not
an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep the soil damp while the seeds germinate, particularly during dry weather. Remove obvious weeds while the seedlings establish. Do not feed. After flowering, leave some seed heads to dry, then cut back and remove the cuttings.

Results

Flowering

Late spring through summer, approximately May to August.

Height

Around 30 cm to 90 cm.

What to expect

These annual cornfield flowers can produce colour in their first year when sown in spring. Autumn sowings usually flower the following year. Leave some seed heads in place to encourage self seeding.

Wildlife value

The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.

No Grow, No Fee

We want your seeds to grow. If you follow our sowing instructions, give them a fair chance, and they still do not grow, we’ll put it right.

Eligible customers can choose either a refund for the seeds that did not grow, or replacement seeds of the same value.
