Borago officinalis

Other names: starflower, beeplant, bugloss, burrage, cool tankard, talewort

This flowering herb is easy to grow and will brighten any garden space in a wash of indigo-blue stars from early summer all the way through to autumn.

Throughout history borage has had various medical uses, most impressively it was fed to soldiers to give them some pre-battle courage. With an almost cucumber-like fresh taste, the flowers are delicious in a salad. The perfect snack for any wilding revolutionary!

How to Plant

Cheap and Easy Method:

Scatter the seeds directly onto bare soil. Clear the area of any debris and lightly rake the soil to create a loose surface. Evenly broadcast the seeds, then lightly rake again to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. This can also be done in pots or growing boxes.

More Involved Method:

Use a terram membrane to suppress unwanted vegetation. Add a layer of soil over the membrane, sow the seeds evenly, and press them in gently. This method, while more labour-intensive, increases the likelihood of success.

When to Plant

Plant Borage seeds in the spring (March to May) or early autumn (September to October).

Where to Plant

Borage thrives in well-drained soil and full sunlight. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.

Watering Schedule

Keep the soil consistently moist during the initial establishment phase. Once established, Borage typically requires minimal watering.

Blooming Period

Borage blooms from late spring through summer (May to August).

Expected Plant Height

Borage typically grows to a height of 60 cm to 90 cm.
