iris pseudacorus

This long-lived perennial is perfect for wet habitats, thriving along watercourses, lakes, ponds, and damp meadows. Blooming from June to August, its large yellow flowers will brighten up the dampest and darkest of wild spaces. A great choice for naturalising wet areas, and a fantastically hardy flower making it perfect for the lazy gardener looking for an easy, and dependable splash of golden yellow.

How to Plant

Cheap and Easy Method:

For a simple approach, scatter the seeds directly onto bare, moist soil in the autumn. This method relies on natural conditions for success, and while it requires minimal preparation, it can have a lower success rate. Ensure the area is cleared of debris and lightly rake the soil to create a loose surface. Evenly broadcast the seeds, then lightly press them into the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. This method works well along water margins or in damp meadows, fens, or other moist habitats.

More Involved Method:

For better results, particularly in areas prone to weeds or drier conditions, consider using a terram membrane. Lay the membrane over the planting area to suppress weeds and unwanted vegetation. Over this, add a layer of nutrient-rich, moist soil. Evenly sow the seeds and gently press them in. This method is more labour-intensive but increases the likelihood of successful establishment, particularly in wet areas like pond edges or watercourses.

Alternative Method:

If planting in pots or containers, ensure that they are placed in damp or waterlogged conditions, such as at the edge of a pond. Yellow Iris thrives in waterlogged soil, so keep the pots consistently moist.

When to Plant

For optimal germination, sow the seeds in the autumn (September to November), as the seeds benefit from a natural cold period. However, Yellow Iris seeds can be sown at any time of the year, though spring (March to May) sowing may delay flowering.

Where to Plant

Yellow Iris thrives in wet habitats and is commonly found along watercourses, lakes, ponds, and fens. It can also grow in meadows, woodlands, and dune slacks, provided the soil remains damp. Choose a location that is consistently moist or waterlogged for the best results. If planting by a pond or stream, ensure the roots have good contact with the soil and access to water.

Watering Schedule

During the establishment phase, ensure the soil remains consistently moist. Yellow Iris is tolerant of waterlogged conditions, so regular watering or naturally wet conditions are ideal. Once established, the plant requires minimal additional watering, relying on natural water sources.

Blooming Period

Yellow Iris blooms between June and August, producing large, striking yellow flowers that are easily recognisable. Following flowering, seed pods will develop, ripening in autumn and splitting to reveal orangey-brown seeds.

Expected Plant Height

Yellow Iris typically grows to a height of 1 metre to 1.5 metres, making it a prominent and eye-catching feature in any garden or wetland habitat.
