Planting

When to sow: March to May, or August to October

Position: Sunny or mostly sunny

Soil: Bare, well drained soil

Remove grass, weeds and other plants from the area. Rake the soil, scatter the seeds evenly across the surface and press them in gently. Do not bury them deeply.

Wildflowers grow best where they are not competing with an established lawn.

Nurture

Keep the soil damp while the seeds germinate, especially during warm or dry weather.

Remove aggressive weeds by hand and avoid
feeding the area, as rich soil often encourages grass and weeds more than wildflowers.

Pots

Yes, this mix can be grown in pots.

Use one packet per pot or container. Choose a reasonably wide pot with drainage holes and fill it with low nutrient, free draining compost.

Scatter the seeds across the surface, press them in gently and keep the compost damp while they establish. Place the pot somewhere sunny.

Results

The first flowers may appear from late spring through summer. Annuals such as cornflower, corn marigold, corncockle and field poppy provide faster colour, while perennial species may take longer to establish.

Plants will vary in height, generally from around 20 cm to 1 metre.

Leave some faded flowers and seed heads in place after flowering. This provides food and shelter for wildlife and gives annual species a chance to self seed.
