Planting

When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow
Choose bare soil in sun or light partial shade. Avoid thick grass, heavy weeds and permanently waterlogged ground.

How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate
3 g per m².

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep damp during germination, remove obvious weeds and do not feed. Leave some seed heads after flowering, then cut back and remove the cuttings.

Results

Flowering
Late spring through summer, with timing varying between species.

Height
Around 20 cm to 1 metre.

What to expect
Annuals may flower in the first season, while perennial species become stronger in later years. The mix may look different each season as plants settle into the site.

Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.
