Clay Soils 80/20% Wildflower Meadow Seed Mix

Regular price £14.99

Clay soil has many talents. Draining quickly is not one of them. This mix takes the hint and uses flowers and grasses suited to heavier, moisture retaining ground.

It creates a traditional meadow with plenty of texture, strong wildlife value and species that are less likely to throw a tantrum when the soil turns sticky.

Planting

When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.

Where to sow
Sow on bare clay soil in sun or partial shade. Break up compacted ground and avoid areas that remain completely flooded.

How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.

Sowing rate
5 g per m².

Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.

Nurture

Keep damp during germination, but avoid saturating already wet ground. Remove strong weeds and do not feed. Cut back
after flowering and remove cuttings.

Results

Flowering
Late spring to late summer.

Height
Approximately 20 cm to 1 metre.

What to expect
The mix should establish gradually into a layered meadow. Some species may thrive immediately, while others become more visible after the first year.

Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects.
