Chalky Soil 80/20% Wildflower Meadow Seed Mix
Regular price
£15.99

Designed for chalky, alkaline soils
Includes wildflowers and grasses (80/20)
Thrives in well-drained, stony ground
Native species adapted to calcareous soil
Creates a textured, biodiverse meadow
Stony, pale and stubbornly alkaline? Excellent. Chalky ground can be awkward for ordinary garden plants, but it is prime territory for some of Britain’s most characterful meadow species.
This 80/20 mix combines chalk loving flowers with fine meadow grasses to create a balanced, natural looking habitat rather than a brief flash in the pan.
This is a 80% wildflowers and 20% grasses mix.
Wildflowers included:
Grasses included:
When to sow
For best results, sow from March to May or August to October.
Where to sow
Choose open, sunny, well drained chalky or alkaline ground. Clear away existing grass and weeds before sowing.
How to sow
Remove existing grass and weeds to expose bare soil. Lightly rake the surface, scatter the seed evenly, then gently press or tread it into the soil. Do not bury the seed deeply.
Sowing rate
5 g per m².
Measurements and timings are only a guide. Growing is not an exact science, so do not worry if everything is not perfectly placed.
Keep damp during germination, then let rainfall do most of the work. Remove strong weeds and do not fertilise. Cut back after flowering and remove the cuttings.
Flowering
Usually late spring to late summer.
Height
Around 20 cm to 1 metre.
What to expect
Some quicker species may flower in the first season, while cowslip, knapweed and other perennials build a stronger display over time.
Wildlife value
The flowers provide pollen and nectar for bees,
butterflies, hoverflies and other visiting insects
We want your seeds to grow. If you follow our sowing instructions, give them a fair chance, and they still do not grow, we’ll put it right.
Eligible customers can choose either a refund for the seeds that did not grow, or replacement seeds of the same value.
