SILENE DIOICA
Red Campion is woodland edge romance with a slightly mischievous streak. Pink flowers, soft green leaves, and the sort of gentle glow that makes shady corners feel like they are hiding secrets.
In folklore, Red Campion was linked with fairies, bees, and the mysterious life of the woods. Also known as Robin Hood, it appears after the bluebells have had their big spring moment, like a second act in Sherwood Forest. The bluebells bow out, the fairies change shifts, and Red Campion takes the stage.
If you have shade, hedges, trees, or a slightly moody corner that needs waking up, this is your plant. Scatter some and start your own tiny woodland uprising.
Red Campion likes partial shade, light shade, or gentle sun. It is excellent for woodland edges, hedge lines, shady borders, and relaxed wild corners.
Rip - Clear weeds, grass, and debris. Rake the soil so the seed can reach the surface.
Scatter - Scatter the seed thinly across the soil.
Sow - Press the seed gently into the surface so it makes contact. Do not bury it deeply.
When to sow - For best results sow from August to November. You can also sow from March to May.
Where to sow - Choose a partly shaded or lightly shaded spot with low competition. Red Campion can handle more shade than many wildflowers, but it still needs space to get going.
After sowing, keep the soil lightly moist while the seeds get going, especially in dry weather.
Once you can see green shoots, keep big weeds and thick grass away. Do not feed it. Red Campion is happy in natural, lower fuss conditions.
After flowering, leave some seed heads if you want it to self seed. If it starts spreading more than you want, simply pull out extras while they are small.
Red Campion usually flowers from May to August, bringing pink flowers to shady and semi shaded spots.
It typically grows around 30 to 90 cm tall, depending on conditions.
As a perennial or short lived perennial, it can return and self seed where happy. Bees and other pollinators enjoy the flowers, and the whole plant brings that soft woodland edge feeling without needing you to own an actual forest.
Yes, Red Campion can grow in pots.
Use a medium pot with drainage holes. Fill it with peat free compost mixed with a little grit for drainage, but do not make it too dry.
Scatter the seed thinly, press it in gently, and place the pot in partial shade or gentle sun. Keep lightly moist while the seeds get going. Once growing, water when the compost starts to dry out.
We want your seeds to grow. If you follow our sowing instructions, give them a fair chance, and they still do not grow, we’ll put it right.
Eligible customers can choose either a refund for the seeds that did not grow, or replacement seeds of the same value.
