How to Plant

To plant meadow cranesbill (Geranium pratense) seeds, follow these steps:

1. Prepare the Soil: Meadow cranesbill prefers well-drained, loamy soil, but it can grow in a variety of soil types. Remove weeds and loosen the top layer of soil with a rake or hoe to ensure a good seedbed.

2. Sowing: Sow the seeds directly on the soil surface. Meadow cranesbill seeds need light for germination, so avoid covering them with soil. If needed, lightly press the seeds into the soil to make sure they stay in place.

3. Spacing: Space the seeds about 12-18 inches apart to give each plant room to grow and develop its natural shape.

4. Stratification (Optional): For better germination, you can stratify the seeds. Place them in a damp paper towel inside a plastic bag and refrigerate for 4-6 weeks before planting. This mimics winter conditions and helps break seed dormancy.

When to Plant

Watering Schedule

• Germination and Seedling Stage: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water lightly every day or every other day to ensure the top layer of soil doesn’t dry out.

• Established Plants: Once the plants are established, water moderately. Meadow cranesbill is somewhat drought-tolerant but will perform best if watered once a week during dry periods.

Blooming Period

Meadow cranesbill typically blooms from June to August. The plant produces beautiful, violet-blue flowers with five petals. The blooming season may extend into early autumn in cooler climates or if the weather remains favorable. Deadheading (removing spent flowers) can also encourage a longer blooming period.
