Why you should use Yellow Rattle in your wildflower meadow.
Yellow Rattle, Rhinanthus minor, is an annual wildflower native to the UK and much of Europe.
Due to its semi-parasitic nature, Yellow Rattle is extremely useful in the establishment of wildflower meadows as the flower acts to stop grass growth. Over a whole meadow this will maintain a spread grass sward meaning your wildflowers will be able to access much needed light and oxygen.
Yellow Rattle loves the cold and it’s important to consider this when sowing. If sowing in spring, it is often worthwhile to add extra seed in autumn where germination rates tend to be higher. Yellow Rattle will come back year after year, and will self-seed, but only if you control the grass through the winter by cutting it back. You can negate this with the occasional topping up of more seeds.
